salamt hari jadi 8993!

yaa 20 yg lalu masuk lah aku ke prep school..aku datang awal sebab dekat dari ipoh ...sampai nye disana check2 nama, nama aku no 14..kena tulis kat baju, sampin, baldi, cadar, kelambu, arrgh semua nye no 14....pastu berjumpa la dgn jiran2 sebelah menyebelah.. .toya bedmate aku d13..muka serius je..mungkin home sick..wady d16 muka giler feylong and reza d15..apasal mamat bagak giler ni, suara dah garau!, biar betul dia ni masuk f1 ke f5?? tapi dia lah paling confident compare ngan gang2 dorm A..yg lain muka home sick, yg amat tak membantu aku yg homesick jugak..!!!.. cuaca suram angin sepoi2 bahasa pun tak membantu!... pastu jumpa muka2 anjing..moni + bawal et al....parents aku pun menyuruh lah mamat2 ni menjaga aku dgn baik..prefect konon nye rupanya anjing giler haha!

...beredarlah parents aku setelah kami pegi makan di lembah yg selepas itu dilarang kpd budak2 koleq, form 1 jgn cakap lah....aku kembali ke prep school..terkantoi2 lah aku sambil berborak2 ngan member2 baru ni yg berasl usul dari jauh2 ...perlis la, pahang la, klantan la..semua nya 'que' lagi! teringat lah aku yg schoolmate aku masa primary school rahmat iskandar yg katanya akan ke koleq juga..tetapi tak nampak lagi dia..huh..setelah semua parents beredar kami pun di beri taklimat kena mandi then bersiap utk semayang berjemaah... maka ramai2 la gang2 dorm A dgn baldi + timba yg baru pergi ke bilik mandi yg bersebelahan dgn dining hall..mandi2 dan semayang lah di surau bersebelahan sick bay, yg kelak menjadi dorm kedua utk kawan dari sekolah rendah yg sama ku.

...kami pun kemudian di bawa utk dinner..maka makan la makanan yg sememang nye ganjil bagi perut2 kami...ternampak bahawa seorg kawan ku yg gempal, yg sememang nya homesick tetapi jadi lebih homesick hingga berlingan air mata semasa menjamu selera...(huh. .sekrang kalau ber email bukan main lagi!)...kami balik dorm selepas di bawa ke kelas sekejap..sambung borak2 ..hanyalah utk melupakan perasaan homesick kami! ..light off..first time dalam sejarah hidup aku tidur dalam kelambu..masa ni la rasa paling sayu..nak je aku call mak aku dari phone booth yg ternampak di luar dorm A itu utk mengambil aku pulang..tetapi ditakdirkan tidak...dari malam yg panjang itu ..aku bergelar budak koleq ,batch 8993!

RESHAPING MALAY COLLEGE FOR THE FUTURE

Preamble
The decline of MCKK in terms of Academic achievements, Sports and Co-curricular excellence, Discipline and Leadership has been continuously highlighted by various parties.

The Board of Governors of Malay College Kuala Kangsar (“MCKK”) created a sub-committee to review MCKK’s current state and define its roadmap. “Project Sayong” was kicked-off on 23 July 2005 for this purpose, with a working committee formed, headed by (now Tan Sri) Dato’ Azman Mokhtar.

The Project Sayong team gathered input through secondary research; through interviews with old boys, teachers (current and ex-teachers), students, and others who had connections with MCKK; and through round-table discussions. Generally, the deliverables of the Project Sayong reflect the consensus of the majority of old boys—seniors and juniors—on what should be the ideal action plans to raise the standards at MCKK, to ensure the College remain relevant and respected for the next century, and to become the benchmark for others to emulate.

The Project Sayong has now been passed to the Implementation Workgroup sub-committee within the Board, chaired by Tun Mohammad Hanif Omar and headed by Hj. Khalilur Rahman Ebrahim.

The Project Sayong Final Deliverables come in three volumes.

Volume 1 contains the diagnosis of MCKK, gap analysis, and benchmark documents. Key messages in this volume:
• Identification of emerging (including both national and regional) characteristics and trends relevant to the outlook for MCKK
• Identification of strengths and weaknesses (efficiencies and inefficiencies)
• MCKK organization, capabilities and operational performance report card
• Prioritized list of major issues to focus on key challenges
• Detailed documentation of profile of each comparator schools/ models
• Strategy, operations, organization, performance, etc
• Identification of strategies, operations performance, strengths and weaknesses of each comparator school/ model

Volume 2 outlines the strategic direction for MCKK. Key messages in this volume are:
• Define new model and strategic objectives for MCKK
• Clear understanding of the scope of change needed to succeed in the changing environment
• Formulate the vision and requirements for implementing the necessary strategies

Volume 3 contains the transformation road map:
• Develop recommendations for new organization - aligned with defined strategy for MCKK
• Define supporting implementation roadmap for MCKK’s transformation journey
• Implementation Plan linked to concrete timelines and action plans
• Outline updated, quantifiable and actionable targets

• Academic Excellence shall not be compromised. Syllabus is tailored to address individual capabilities. Arts Stream is reintroduced.
• The development of Soft Skills is an important survival skill
• Noble Values need to be imbued into the students
• The right Environment is a must; freedom to explore/ learn, global exposure through exchange programs, Kuala Kangsar developed into Center of Education
• The Traditions & Culture in line with the Vision & Mission should be continued
• Health is given attention; a good diet and a healthy environment

Teachers
• Special Selection of teachers a must; they should be the best
• Composition and Population of teachers are given attention
• The rewards for being an MCKK staff should also be above other schools
• Training and Development of teachers is an MCKK priority
• Coaches will be hired to attend to sports development
• A Monitoring System will monitor the teachers/ coaches performance
• Teachers will share common Noble Values alike students and the whole community

RECOMMENDATIONS

THE PROJECT PROPOSES CERTAIN CHANGES THAT CAN BE TAKEN AND THE TRANSFORMATION ROADMAP THAT ACCOMPANIES IT

 Project Sayong will first target the Malay College Kuala Kangsar as the testing ground on a more holistic approach with an eye on developing a human capital pipeline for the future of the nation.

 The mission of MCKK will be addressed to focus more on leadership and emphasis on education as a whole.

 The project starts with the diagnosis of the system and benchmarking of other educational standards so that the shortcomings of the present system can be identified and addressed.

 Once these has been identified the project proceeds to analyze and develop a new approach to education and its strategic direction.

 In this document, the project outlines critical action plan to be undertaken and the transformation roadmap that accompanies it.

THE KEY ACTION PLAN OF THE SAYONG PROPOSAL CAN BE ORGANISED INTO SEVERAL BROAD INITIATIVES

1. Engagement Plan to Lobby for the “Special Status” of MCKK within the MOE
 Getting buy in from all stakeholders to implement proposal via the Syndication/Communication Plan
 Legal steps to achieve the special status

2. Establishing the Oversight Structure of MCKK with BoG at the helm of the command tower
 Engage other stakeholders to sort out jurisdictional issues

3. Formalizing the relationship with Malay Rulers via the Conference of Rulers

4. Organizing funding requirements to implement Sayong proposal covering both Government funding and Private Initiatives

5. Carrying out improvements and operational enhancements to the school in terms of Management, Students, Teachers and Physical Infrastructure

ESTABLISHING OVERSIGHT STRUCTURE OF MCKK WITH BOG AT THE HELM OF THE COMMAND TOWER

 The realignment of the command tower will also seek changes to streamline the administrative implementation of the programs. The role of the numerous stakeholders and their influence will be altered to better serve the school. This streamlining will cut down on the confusion surrounding the control of the school.

 The Board of Governors (BoG) will be the sole party responsible for the policies of the school and the confirmation of the school being under the patronage of the Conference of Rulers. The BoG will be empowered to appoint the Headmaster and oversee the financial status and control of the institution.

 Establishing an unambiguous oversight structure of MCKK primarily involves engaging the various stakeholders to sort out jurisdictional issues.

ORGANISE FUNDING REQUIREMENTS TO IMPLEMENT SAYONG PROPOSAL

 The school will also be semi-independent financially with the setting up of an endowment fund. This fund will be controlled by an independent fund manager who answers directly to the BoG.

 The MoE will also contribute and make available allocations to upgrade the facilities of the school to the standard expected of an institution of such status. There will also be some initiatives from the private and corporate sectors to provide aid to the school.

CARRYING OUT IMPROVEMENTS/ OPERATIONAL ENHANCEMENTS TO THE SCHOOL

• The headmaster will have certain autonomous powers to see that the day to day running of the school is carried out with minimum outside interference.

• The headmaster will change his role to that of a more administrative one with specific positions in charge of Student Affairs, Academic Affairs and Administration and Finance. This will decentralize the Headmaster’s job scope and the responsibility of control spread to specific individuals trained in said areas.

• The admission process will be changed and the programs and curriculum offered will also be modified so that the student's educational process is enhanced.

• Teachers in the school will be hired by the headmaster and the admission for said teachers will also be changed to meet the demands of the new curricular.

• The proposed improvements/ operational enhancements to the school are summarized as follows :

Management
 Board of governors will scrutinize headmaster candidates to ensure the job gets to the right person
 With cooperation from the ministry of education, appointment of the college staff will come under the headmaster’s purview
 The Ministry and the headmaster will be responsible to hire three top deputies at the Malay College

Students
 MCKK admission system to be developed
 Post SPM programs to be developed
 A quality control system need to be developed
 MCKK to revamp or adopt KPI system
 Structured leadership modules and programs need to be tabled
 The school’s academic subjects, curricular and syllabus needs to be finalized
 English is given a priority and additional programs laid out
 Exchange programs to be selected and paperwork to be finalised
 The approach to instill values requires strategic planning and implementation
 The house system is revised

Teachers
 An evaluation and gap analysis needs to be carried out among current teachers and coaches
 New teachers and coaches will fill in the gaps
 Selection of teachers is a continuous process
 Teachers and coaches will enjoy benefits superior to prevailing norm
 Key performance index for teachers and coaches needs introduction
 System to monitor the KPI will be developed

Physical Infrastructure
 Major upgrade will take six months to complete
 Allocation for new facilities will be made available to implement plan to expand the college
 Big School and its surrounding
 Academic Block
 The tasks of maintaining the assets must be taken seriously

The Malay College Kuala Kangsar

April 18-20, 2008

The Old Boys’ Weekend, or OBW® for short, is an annual homecoming event for the old boys of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK). The weekend is usually filled with games between the old boys and the students as well as teachers of the College. There are also other activities such as a forum; career talks; a dinner and musical show; and other fares. The old boys enjoyed the weekend (without their families) and re-lived their experiences during the school days years ago. They played their favourite games, eat at their favourite joints, stayed at the old dormitories, and passed their times by telling old stories of their escapades during their times in College. Those who have been to the OBW® will usually look forward to go to the next one!

Old Boys are requested to preserve decorum. Smoking (cigarettes, pipes, pots) and drinking (beer, wine, liquor, spirit) are forbidden in the MCKK campus. For those who still crave to smoke, please do so at designated areas marked “Sudut Maut”; and please don’t throw cigarette butts around. Those caught smoking at NON-designated areas will be fined RM5 for every offense.

Dear All,

Subsequent to the recommendation made by a 3 Men Interviewing Panel for the post of Executive Secretary of MCOBA which has been deliberated and approved by the JPM of MCOBA that met on the 31st of March 2008, on behalf of MCOBA Secretariat, I would like to announce the appointment of Sdr Mohd Ghazali Bahrein as the new Executive Secretary of MCOBA effective 1st of April 2008.

Sdr Mohd Ghazali Bahrein is from Ahmad House ( C 62) and is a graduate from University Malaya/University of Cambridge and pursued a management course at Harvard Business School. He served in senior management positions in FELDA for 25 years and was also the Honorary Secretary of the Harvard Business School Alumni Club of Malaysia for 18 years.

MCOBA Old Boys Weekend will be held on 18 to 20th April 2008. As usual there will be games and concert for the old boys. Hope that more from our batch will make the journey to Kuala Kangsar this year.

Twelve's victory does alma mater proud

TWELVE out of 15 'old boys' of the Malay College Kuala Kangsar did their alma mater proud when they emerged victorious in the recently concluded general election.
Of the 15, nine were Umno candidates, five contested under the Pas banner and one from Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

However, not all of them were elated with their respective wins. Mohd Zahir Abdul Khalid, who won the Kamunting State seat in Perak, felt that it was a bittersweet victory for him.

"What disappoints me is that even though I won a seat, the Perak State Government will be formed by the opposition, not Barisan Nasional," he said.

Mohd Zahir squeaked through with a 555 majority, defeating Pas' Muhamad Apardi Shaari.

However, he is adamant that it would not deter him from performing his duties as an elected representative. The University Teknologi Petronas corporate services manager has already given up his job to focus on serving the Kamunting community.

His background as an MCKK old boy, he said, has and will be an advantage towards carrying out his duties.

Another victorious alumnus, Umno's Wan Abdul Hakim Wan Mokhtar, who won the Air Putih State seat in Terengganu, said his MCKK background was a source of pride for him but it mattered little to his constituents.

"My educational background is something that I am always proud. But in my constituency, it isn’t that relevant; all they want is for someone to be able to speak for them," he said.

The mechanical engineer said, with his experience and knowledge, he hopes to contribute more to his Felda constituents.

The MCKK old boys who made it in the general elections are: Zaabar Mohd Adib (BN-Umno) Rantau Abang, Dungun (Class of '71) ,Dr Nik Mazian Nik Mohamed (PAS) Gaal, Pasir Putih (Class of '75), Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar (Pas) Tumpat (Class of '68),Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (BN-Umno) Gua Musang (Class of '52).

Also victorious were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department ,Datuk Seri Mohamad Nazri Aziz (BN-Umno) Padang Rengas (Class of '71), Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah(BN-Umno) Temerloh (Class of '78), Datuk Sharir Samad (BN-Umno) Johor Bahru (Class of '65), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (PKR) Seri Setia, Kelana Jaya (Class of '99), Iskandar Samad (Pas) Chempaka, Pandan (Class of '78) and Education Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein (BN-Umno) Sembrong.

MCKK, also known as 'the Eton of the East' is one of the nation' most prominent boarding schools with a proud record of producing some of Malaysia’s most illustrious political and corporate leaders.

Amongst the more notable alumni of the Malay College are Umno founder Dato' Onn Jaafar, former Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak Hussein as well as former Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is de facto PKR leader.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malay Col lege in Kuala Kangsar, Perak, is one of the nation’s most prom inent boarding schools with a proud record of producing some of Malaysia’s most illus trious political and corporate leaders.
Take this 12th national general election, for example.

There are at least 15 candidates who are former MCKK boys — nine are Umno candid ates, five Pas and one from PKR whose non-contesting party adviser, Datuk Seri An war Ibrahim, was also an ex-student.

Weekend Mail spoke to two of them — Wan Abdul Hakim Wan Mokhtar and Mohd Za hir Abdul Khalid — both from the Class of ‘85, who said they were not surprised to see many former students in politics.

Wan Abdul Hakim, who is the BN-Umno candidate for Air Putih, Kemaman, Terengganu, said he expected the number to be bigger.

“There is nothing to be sur prised about. It’s a known fact that the MCKK produces the best among the best in any field, including politics.

“When you have all the best students cramped into one place, there is bound to be a lot of jostling to be No. 1.

“To sum it up, MCKK students have had their share of experience in political reality and survival.”

Asked how the college is able to produce leaders, he said it is not done intentionally.

“Students who are accepted in to MCKK are all special in their own ways. The college only helps to enhance our capabilities in different ways.
“It was like a psychological war. Everyone wants to be the best and with that in mind, everyone wants to outdo each other, which led to us to ac quiring leadership skills.

“I also think that our sports manship has brought us together.”

Mohd Zahir, the BN-Umno candidate contesting in Kamunting, Taiping, Perak, echoed this view.

“MCKK boys are vocal in ex pressing their views. As such, it’s not a surprise to see their names in the list.

“During our days in MCKK, students had always known to be diplomatic. Personally, I have developed an interest in politics since young. Both of my parents being active members of Umno.”

He said MCKK had helped him enhance his interest in this field. While at MCKK, Mohd Zahir was active in campaigning, especially for the students’ association.

“The college will not only nurture the students but enhance their abilities, as students who enrolled there are of many char acters and interests.

“It has fine-tuned our strengths to help us move into the next phase of life.”

So wouldn’t there be problems during school reunions, espe cially among those from political divides?

“Why should there be any?” asked Mohd Zahir, adding that although they may have differences in opinions, MCKK boys have been taught to have a sense of respect for each other.

“We are all able to argue our thoughts in a civilised manner and I think that helps to keep the ties close.”

Said Wan Abdul Hakim: “We are as one when it comes to MCKK reunions. Regardless of which year we graduated or from which political party we came from, we would put our political agendas aside, and chat about our good times together and how we have moved on.”

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, an MCKK boy from the Class of ‘71, said it was a pleasant surprise to know that there are many former students on the list.

In 2005, Nazri was quoted in the media as saying that the college had not been producing students who rose to become Malay political leaders in the re cent past.

“When I look at Malay leaders below the level of ministers today, I cannot identify anyone who is the product of MCKK. It is sad. Something must be done to correct the situation,” he had said then.

Nazri cited the focus on Sci ence subjects in the secondary education system, where science students are not interested in pursuing politics, as the obvious reason.

He added that less than 10 per cent of the students chose the arts stream, something MCKK had to change as almost all the political leaders of the past came from the arts stream.

Nazri, when contacted by Weekend Mail on Thursday, stood by his statement, saying that there are still not many MCKK students who are leaders, not like before.

“They (MCKK) should go back to the old system, whereby they produce more trained adminis trators and not scientists.

“I am very grateful to Edu cation Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein for allowing the college as one of the few selected schools to be given the autonomy to decide on the curriculum to be used for the school.”

Since its establishment in 1905, MCKK has been an exceptional educational institution for Malays of all backgrounds, producing many national leaders, corporate figures and intellectuals.

Key trends of 2008:

Casual tailoring – tailoring continues to be seen all over next year and even spills on to casual wear. Casual wear now includes cleaner pieces like tailored shorts and shirts and the casual blazer give a great finish to the look. Giorgio Armani had clearly spearheaded this look that can now be seen in the collections of most labels notably Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Viktor & Rolf. Scruffy is definitely taking a backstage. Head to Club Monaco for similar styles.

Prints – have fun with prints! Same as this year, prints continue to dominate the runways for next year – intricate, subtle ones or even bold, ornate pieces. Go for something that you feel most comfortable going out with and again prints can be used on different items – ties, sweaters, bags, scarves and even shoes.

Color – thank god this is not ending for next year. Men should definitely inject more colour into their wardrobes! Dries Van Noten, Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton showed some of the most amazing looks for Spring Summer 2008. This really doesn’t mean that you have to start wearing lime green sweaters. If you prefer a more subtle injection of colour, why not play around with your accessories – scarf, belt, shoes or even socks. Paul Smith offers the best looking multi-coloured socks around.

Accessorizing – men’s runway shows are definitely showing more options for accessorizing. Bags, scarves, belts, ties, watches, badges, sunglasses, shoes – look at how you can jazz up and complete your outfit. My must have next season – Marc by Marc Jacobs colorful belt (think Lego) and great casual bags!

Flamboyant or conservative?

Depending on one's character and personality, I definitely think there will be a time to be both. One can see a spectrum of designs from a single label too that appeases the many different looks from conservative to a much dressier/showier appearance as seen in shows from Versace, Dolce & Gabbana to Louis Vuitton. Dress how you feel and according to where you’re going/what you’re attending.

It item?

Season after season I think guys should continue investing on key items in their wardrobe – an immaculate suit, a good pair of sunglasses, a practical classic bag and a decent pair of shoes. At the end of the day, paying attention to great classic pieces and accessories will ensure you an impeccable and complete wardrobe at the end of the day.

So what if the whole world is after that must-have orange pair of pants this season? Save your money and grab that finely made leather belt instead, you’ll have more use of it.

Go for great, practical bags! It should not just be a tool for you to carry your things, but an extension of your whole look and even personality. Tonnes of great bags for men to choose from major labels like Prada, Bottega Venetta, Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent and my personal favorite Valextra. For affordable finds, head to Massimo Dutti, Zara and Top Shop – practical and good looking options.

Luxury, mix and match or be an individual?

To me, it has always been of utmost importance to show one's individuality through your appearance. I feel that recent times have allowed men to fully explore their own style as designers have laid out more options for them to explore their personality. Luxury items are definitely one way, but not the be all. The thing to remember is to not follow the pack, and just be you. Have fun!

Male style icon of 2008?

Style icons exist for a very long time - my personal favourites include Steve McQueen, Jude Law, Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, Kanye West and David Beckham. Currently I am adoring the style of Italian Lapo Elkann – hero of casual tailoring. His attitude reflects the true European male appeal/sexiness. I can’t really say who will be the male style icon for 2008 yet, I’m hoping new/fresh style boys will rise to impress and awe. Watch this space.

What would you like to see men doing more of - style wise - next year?

To find their own sense of style that reflects their personal taste and personality. Pay attention to small details in their wardrobe and appearance that say a lot - hair, shoes, jewellery etc. Play with more colours too – even if you’re into dark or muted colours, there are different shades that you can explore to make your overall look more interesting.

A definite no - no:

Sunglasses indoors and at night!!! It's just not working if you're not Kanye or Diddy guys.

My respected brothers and distinguished Gentleman,

We've got a date to book. January 26th 2008. Please circle your calendars, block your diaries, update your organizers, inform your PAs, bribe your wives, and do whatever if you have to, but please attend our big get together gathering, with nothing else in mind, but to eratkan tali siratulrahim antara kita, family members of Class of '93.

Attached here with are the unofficial minutes which I have had been (un)fortunate enough to compile for the sake of all not present but concern and care about all of our fellow brothers whom we have shared so much with during our time in Koleq.

Of course, the main agenda would be to select among us, those entrusted to carry on the torch burning, 15 years after we leave school, for us to move as on again as a single entity and to contribute to the general people at large. In this gathering, we hope to renew old ties, bury old hatchets, and forged new friendship as we try to live within the Koleq spirit within us, in any way that we can.

The selection of our Class of '93 Batch Committee would be deemed futile and syok sendiri, if the turn out to elect them is only a handful. It is the hope of the pro-tem organizers, headed volunteerily by Sdr Poen and heavily aided by his special AJKs (who were elected by virtue of attending Saturdays function, nonetheless had pledged their utmost commitment to the cause) to get the maximum attendance to this function, which also coincides with our 15 years upon leaving Koleq.

For 15 years we have been operating in an adhoc and makeshifts manner while many of us pursue the roads of academic, marry and struggle with the day to day operational life demand. Now that the majority of us has more or less settle down, it is time we get organized for the sake of distributing the charity that we are capable of, in view of menjaga dan mengharumkan nama baik Koleq dan mengeratkan hubungan siratulrahim antara semua anggota Class of '93. All are welcome to this event, including Norman Hakim, Mok Niza, Zahari, Hardy, Rahmat Iskandar, to name a few and every one who had in any way been associated with us from day one till the graduation of Class of '93. So if any of you know their whereabouts, please, do inform them of this gracious invitation.

Lets make this event a tremendous success of the new year. With ample notice, dedication and support form all of us, we can hope to rekindle the spirit of camaderie (no kechoq, nobody dearie in particular J ) between us that is the epitome of our Malay College trademark, the band of brothers and its enviable brotherhood of unity.

The date I am priviledge to inform is January 26, 2007 . Venue is tentatively at Kelab Shah Alam.

On a separate note, the majlis tahlil for Arwah Shahrol Nizam and Kamal Erfan went smoothly. The invited Ustaz was pleasant in leading the bacaan tahlil and doa selamat in the event. The food by Sdr Bob Caterer prove to be enough for tea, dinner and supper and the free flow air sirap laced with limau and kopi O sees that the thirst is quenched. The turnout was naturally a bit low, but considerably acceptable considering the busy nature of many of us, nevertheless as we are so fond of saying, better to have some reps than none at all.

There are rooms of improvement that we can work on, it all depends on the success of us updating the batch register and keeping in touch with each other.

I stayed back with Alie, Kicap, Pron, Bob, Hongue, Yo, CD, Sadat, Yazeed, Izzat, Soed till the closing, and the chat we had was like a dejavu scene from a common room setting in Big School. Armed with cushion pillows on the floor, tobacco and slices of limau, we talked about many many things Koleq. One chat led to another, and 14 years after I left school, only did I know that it was Aris who were the only one really blowing the err-whatever- he-was-blowing instrument in the Band team. The rest were merely play-acting, and according to Kicap, there were a few other juniours in the band team who could play as well. From band, next thing we know we were profiling every body to their Tuesday activities. The cadets, the scouts, cadet bomba, the pbsm and its scandalous gossips. Before long, conversation turns to sukan tara (don't asked me how it got there) and during this conversation that Yo inform us that all the Piala Pusingan in the Year 93 had no records shown, as Koleq kinda 'lost' them. We agreed to somehow push this bit of important revelation into the Minutes section, in Other related maters although it wasn't discussed at that time. Obviously, somebody needs to address the issue, and set the records straight while we are still not too old to remember. It is already a gargantuan task to recalled what Jengkalona's real name was, prompting Bob to offer an RM 10 bet to anyone who could deliver his real name in that forum. Much to the dismay of Bob, Pron managed to deliver an injury time 'shukri' to the 'ahhhs' and laughter from everybody who seem to agreed that was Jengka's real name. I wouldn't know, though I could strangely remember how he was assigned the nickname to start with. (Jengs- jgn marah aku)We remember many other strange things that happened years ago, notably on how Dud managed to sail clear in the high jump events. To this day, I still couldn't compute the logic on how Dud was able to defy the gravity at big school. Back in 1992,, he was probably just a few kilos less than me, but I felt like the gravity was pulling me with a G-force magnitude. Somebody suggested that a rematch of 100m inter house took place, and that somebody after seeing Fauzi Rosli aka Dadar, (a former Sulaiman House sprinter) recently, conveniently declared to me that Leyman can forget whatever slim chances they had about winning. (was it you Soed?)

I cant go on rambling about that night, but I am sure you could imagine that sense of dejavu I talked about. Its like we never leave that school, because Soed look so bloody who he used to be, and CD is the same version except for the additional jambang attached to his face, like an option form the altar you could select in Yahoo. Yazeed, okay Yazeed did transform like his Transformers msg alert, and somehow the nick Gumox really doesn't seems applicable no more. Yazeed is now slim and he did contributed in the meeting in real live mode, prompting Hongue and the rest to quickly remind him- woi –ko bukan cakap dalam email jer ke? That aside, the conversation, the laughter, the Bob-Alie-Sadat tag team of cracking jokes out of anything and everything, I swear I couldn't find a better place to heal. And to think all this took place without Mamaque, Pogym, Niko and the rest, I look forward to another event of such gathering.

Deep in my heart, I knew both arwah's would have approved the spirit friendship and family-like reunion we had that night. Trust me, it's not for sale. The feeling is magic.

Remembering Allahyarham Shahrol Nizam

…Having completed four TN Data Center moves, I decided to keep momentum and proceed with MNI dev move. After the Hari Raya holidays, the first weekend was catered for MNI production move. The Move itself was a success, albeit completion only at 1030pm that Sunday. What follow suit the next day, was something I was totally unprepared for. I had been anticipating calls form the various Application leads and Users on the post migration activities, instead the first call I received that morning was from Aris Abdillah. Not having stored his mobile number, it was a pleasant surprised to learn that it was Aris. Composed as Payung has always been, he asked me if the 'news' were confirmed. I remembered my shock and struggle to remain calm, I told Aris I need to make a few round of calls to check, however deep in my heart- we knew people don't joke about these kinda things. It was indeed a sad sad day that following Monday for me, upon learning the death of a close friend, brother and comrade in our own ways.

Shahrol Nizam Yusof, or simply Shahrol as I have known him, passed way that morning of October 22nd 2007, leaving behind a heavily pregnant wife and 3 beautiful daughters. His fourth child was due to be delivered in 2 weeks time. At the time of writing, I learned that his wife had safely given birth to their baby boy last Friday. Shahrol death came as sudden news to many of us. We were only in our 31 st year, and he did look so healthy. Post mortem report indicates that Shahrol died of heart failure, due to some blockage of the vessels inside the heart.

I remembered Arwah as a very nice kid back in my school days. He was in 1 PK 1, and Arwah was a jovial, cheerful lad who is generous with smiles and grins. Among my earliest memory of Arwah, was during our get to know conversation, and I could clearly remember him telling me he was from Kuala Nerang Kedah. We immediately convert to our northern slang since that, and get along quite well in school, partly because we are in the same Sulaiman House. I always thought Arwah to be quite religious. He entered the hafazan Yasin competition sometime when we were in Form 2 or 3, being those few who were struggling with my Quran reading back in school, I remembered my utter amazement back than at anyone who could hafal the entire surah! I did not remembered who eventually won the competition, but I sure hope those early promising moments of his life are indeed testimonials of his deep faith in his religion, as Arwah lies in transition to the hereafter.

I guess we see less of each other as we go along the higher Forms, partly because we were in different dorm and stream. Subsequently, after SPM I heard Arwah got to study in the UK, where he eventually met his wife and subsequently married. I guess he was those few who marries early in life, and is blessed with about 9 years of marriage life with beautiful children. I remembered him holding a reception ceremony upon coming back from his studies; Arwah took the trouble to send me an invitation card to his function in Kedah. By now, I guess he had move to Pokok Sena. I remembered this well as upon coming back to Penang from UM for one of my breaks, my dad was enthusiast in telling me I got a wedding invitation from a friend in Pokok Sena. Despite my token grunts of having my mails opened, immediately I recalled it might be Shahrol, and upon looking at the card it was confirmed. I was happy for him, sadly, I do not have the opportunity to attend his function than. Looking back now, I wish I had, I wish I had taken more trouble to be present on important occasions such as those, as the realms that we live here 'temporarily' in this world certainly did not register back that, despite the consistent and random reminder we always get from time to time.

I only met Arwah again after a long, long time. I couldn't remember if he attended our 2003 reunion. If any of you culd, let me know, it might be the first time I saw him back after so long. Maybe my memory is failing me, but I did recalled seeing him again sometime early in 2005. I knew he was working in Petronas, and on one occasion I was seeing Rafizi ('94) at Suria KLCC, Arwah joined us. That was how I learned that they were very close friends. I must admit that Arwah look very different form the days I know him, overnight, he has grown tall and lanky, not the short and small guy he was in school. And the he did look different with his beard and moustache that he kept. He remains though, the soft spoken intelligent person I used to know, and the occasional glimpses of the wry smile and unmistakable grin did affirm to me that this is indeed the Shahrol that I know.

Since than, we met a few times, notably during a Malay College Fund Raising Dinner sometime in March 2005, organized by MCOBANITA, a joined wives of MCOBs association, in view of the 100 years road show. I think Naman was there too on that occasion, and Arwah was there in his capacity as a volunteer to usher the invited former teachers of MCKK. I asked him, how did he got involved with these activities, and Arwah said, he felt a compelling urged to get himself involved with any Malay College activities as his way of giving something in return, to the school that nurture him to become where he is today. I remembered that conversation well, because Arwah later gave me a lift back to my office at Jalan Melaka where I parked. I had stayed back to help him see the last of the guest teachers leaving, and we escorted a painter teacher who was holding a small gallery exhibition in conjunction with that dinner. Little did we both know at that time, why Arwah was rushing to do his bit. From Rough's blog, I realized that Arwah had done many other Koleq- related activities, including helping organized the present debaters training session with the old debaters/ coaches. We parted ways that night with the usual promises to keep in touch etc… promises that is always hard to keep in this mad mad world we live in.

The next time, and probably last I saw Arwah was during the MCOBA Annual dinner in 2005, in KLCC Convention Center. We chatted til the wee hours in the morning. Again being part of the organizer committee, Arwah had dispatched his duties exceptionally well that night. He was involved with the Sound and Lighting queue for the event. I joked that he has finally fulfilled his wishes to be part of MCCC after leaving school. It is this kinda jokes that really binds us, old boys as we recalled an era that we leave behind.

Some time this year, Arwah text msg me to say that he is on Utusan Malaysia first page picture, in a picture with the President of Petronas, Tan Sri Hassan Merican. I cant remember exactly what the original news was about, but it was a picture of a round table meeting with many parties, and Arwah was part of the meeting delegation, probably in his capacity form the corporate planning unit. I did call him and congratulate, and said that I look forward to the day people text me and said they were on the same picture with him instead, as future leader in Petronas. Arwah confided with me, very humbly as he was, that it was such an insignificant and small role in that meeting he helped organized, but it was a memorable moment in his life, to be part of his CEO's delegation, and Arwah had a lot of respect and passion for his organization and work. I was happy that I convinced him, any small contribution matters, and in his case, it was helping the economy of many lives that Petronas touched, not to mention to the country. So yes, he got every right to celebrate that day.

We have lost another brother and comrade in our own unique family, but the memory and goodness or Arwah should remain in our harts forever, in discharging all our duties to the best of our abilities, as a genuine budak Koleq. I'm sure that is how Arwah would have like us to remember him.

Our last contact came on Hari Raya eve, Arwah text me to wish Selamat Hari raya, Maaf Zahir Batin, mudah – mudahan segala amalan di bulan Ramadhan yang lalu di terima Allah. Again I regretted badly that I did not manage to reply the many sms that came on that day, including his. But I did amin kan his doa, that mudah – mudahan segala amalan yang baik dibulan Ramadhan yang baru berlalu di terima Allah. Maybe Arwah knew it was going to be his last Ramadhan. I sincerely pray, it has been his best. Ameen.

The Malay College Kuala Kangsar Wind Orchestra was a big hit at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar Old Boys’ reunion dinner.

THE comment about the old teachers was brief but very sentimental at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) Old Boys' reunion dinner on Saturday.

A spoof on the angkasawan project at the same function.

It came from Datuk Seri Megat Najmuddin Megat Khas, the old boys' association president, who in his speech paid tribute to those who had taught at the school, a few of whom were fit enough to be present at the annual function.

"To you and all our teachers, there's no way we can repay you. Look at what you've made us become -- pot-bellied, balding and very opinionated. But underneath all that, you made us believe in ourselves to achieve our dreams and ambitions."

More than 1,000 people attended the dinner at Hotel Istana in Kuala Lumpur, including Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah, Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Jaafar Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Raja Muda of Perak Raja Dr Nazrin Shah, who is also chairman of the MCKK board of governors.

Megat Najmuddin was absolutely right about the old boys being too opinionated because discussions at the dinner table that night centred on nothing but current affairs -- the impending general election, the just-concluded Umno assembly, a street demonstration earlier in the day in Kuala Lumpur, etc.

Even the play staged by the old boys took a cynical look at the latest events as they did a spoof of Malaysia's first man in space and the national angkasawan project as well as news on the controversial video clip that has allegedly implicated the former chief justice.

Thought I should share some pics of our last day at Koleq. These pictures were taken just before the south bound train departed. Most of us left Koleq today 14 years ago, or in the early hours of the following day. I can still recall that day, because it was a very sad day indeed. Most of us were crying, sad to part with our beloved alma matter... As for myself, I wept inside the car all the way home the following morning. I still remember my youngest sister's facial expression at that time (she was merely 2) . She was obviously surprised to see an adult cry...Hmm, come to think of it, that was the last time I cried so heavily up to this day, perhaps... And I believe the tears show how much we love our school, our friends... Let's revive that spirit by participating in our batch's activities. Come and spend some of your time with other members. It's one of those times when we can forget about work and talk about the old days... And memories can't ignore...
